Week #2 Summer/Fall 2017

This week is off to a good start.  We have some extra additions to our farm crew now that school is out for the summer.  Landon has returned for his second season, and convinced his brother to join us a few days a week until he heads to college in the fall.  Frances and Riley (my nieces, and daughters of Roy and Julie at Blue Rooster farm) have jumped in, helping with CSA prep on Monday and Tuesdays.  The extra help has made a big difference already!

This week's share is full of color- not something that we can always achieve this early in the spring, but with a bountiful crop of carrots last fall that stored very well, and an experiment with transplanting some specialty beets, we are able to mimic the rainbow! If you need some ideas for preparing these beets here is a website that offers 18 different beet recipes that look great.  Also beet tops are in the same family as chard and can be used similarly. We hope you enjoy both their beauty and their taste (and nutrients!)

Share contents: Strawberries, Asparagus, Cucumber, Gold and Chiogga Beets (bunched), Red beets (2016 crop), Scallions (bunched) Lettuce Heads, Lettuce Mix (wash before use), Kale/Chard, Baby Carrots (2016 crop), herbs (parsley, dill, cilantro, rosemary.)

Egg Shares: This week is an "even" week, so only those with an every week egg share should pick up eggs.  If you signed up for every other week eggs, and did not get them last week, please talk to us before taking so we can make sure we get our egg numbers straight here at the start of the season:-)

Please let us know if you have unanswered questions! Deb's cell phone number is 717-348-4916 or send us an email at csa@villageacresfarm.com.

Pickup Locations and Times:

Harrisburg Broad St Market: At Radish and Rye food hub, located in the Brick Building of the Broad St. Market.  Shares can be picked up Friday afternoon 12-6 PM , optional Saturday pickup during market hours (7AM-4PM).  Note that if picking up on Saturday, shares will not necessarily be refrigerated overnight. Ask staff members for your share; the egg shares will be kept in their cooler.

Harrisburg East- Front Porch of 3623 Montour St. Harrisburg PA. 1-7 PM.  As this is an unstaffed pickup, we will have a checklist on the top of the red cooler on the porch. Please confirm what we have you signed up for. If you have an egg share, they will be located inside the cooler. Medium shares are in white cardboard boxes. We appreciate if you leave the share boxes, and take the produce in the liner.

Late Pickup info

CSA Boxes/Packaging:  We like to pack your share in durable boxes with breathable plastic liners for optimal delivery ease and shelf life. In order to do this in a cost-effective manner, we ask that you just take the liner with you and return it the next week (or even come with a reusable bag to transfer your produce). If you do find yourself needing to take home crates and liners (and we know there are occasions for doing so), please bring them back the next week so that we can continue to keep our costs down.  We reuse many types of containers- 1 doz egg cartons (paper cartons preferred), green berry tills, quart and pint jars, etc.  (Several items we do not reuse include plastic egg carton and plastic berry containers)

Recipes:  Did you know we have hundreds of recipes on our website and they can all be searched by ingredient? Simply visit www.VillageAcresFarm.com/recipe and search away. If you come across a recipe you particularly like, please send it and we’ll add it.
